For James Chen's wife

James was lamenting the fact that his wife won't let him have a sand table outside for fear the children will track sand in the house. I told him that sand was the least of our worries, and thought I should show the state of our living room so he can show his wife when she complains about small messes

That's not even as bad as it gets, and indeed is what often passes for clean...

The culprits.

I might as well stick some links in:

My cousin-in-law Aimee has an Etsy store. We should probably have one as well.

The Reverend Corwin & Nellie Taylor Collection collection of old photographs of Korea.

A romantic story amid the conflict between US and Korean culture.

New Rail Models - check out the How it's Done section especially.

A good metalworking/machining blog

Thin Kerf Technologies - for Saw Filers...

That's some living room! And do I see a dog?

I also see you have that Thomas train table going, as well as a kitchen set and a toy chest. Those are items (and the dog) would not be allowed in our household. My wife runs the show at home...

As a result, the kids end up playing in the bedroom most often, which is a disaster area. Dried Play-Doh, books, balls, Easter eggs and toy animals scattered everywhere.

Yes, Stanley the huge black lab/elephant mix. He creates piles of dog hair everywhere and knocks things and children down. He also tracks in mud. We also have a cat that likes to kill large animals and leave pools of blood and bodyparts out and around.

I think you need a playhouse in the back yard - that way the kids can have a space to make huge messes and your wife won't leave you. I would love to know what disgusted reaction your wife has to the pictures. Luckily I married a woman who is as slovenly as I am.

You're a lucky man to have found a woman who matches you in that respect. I somehow have found the woman who is not organized but thinks she is (don't tell her I said that). So while on the surface everything looks nice, look out for that bowling ball when you open the closet! Of course it doesn't help that we have 2 cats 1 dog and not much space at all. Good thing the yard is so big!

Ok..this is a small, small, world. I just went out to the link for the machining blog you posted and then I come across a yoyo..that I recognize! So I follow the link to Practical Machinist which I read often but seemed to have missed this yoyo post, posted by someone I know from the yoyo message boards who used to be in a yoyo club that I am in until he went to school in NY. Weird.

Don't know what it says about me (ok, yes I do) but I didn't think it looked all that messy.

Sad but true.

Rob, we could probably hide stuff too but we have no closet space...glad I could make the yo-yo connection peripherally - sort of like that 6 degrees of separation thing, but internetty.

Liz, It's been messier...
But I think that's the daily average. Usually Henry has also thrown all the cushions off the couch as well.

My desk and my shop are generally clean, and that's all I can manage. The house, well meh...
